Kotor Kitties is a partnership of all-volunteer charities committed to reducing the suffering of Montenegro’s community animals.

Prevention is the kindest way.

Community Cats, Strays, Street Cats, Wanderers…

The natural charm and grace of these animals fascinates people all over the world! But when overpopulation goes beyond what a community can properly care for, the charm is lost in the suffering.

It is devastating to witness the protruding ribs, swollen bellies and thin coats caused by malnutrition. It’s not that kind-hearted locals and tourists don’t do their best to feed them—Montenegro simply has too many community cats (and dogs!) to care for. Litter after litter of beautiful kittens sicken and die from a virus—preventable if only there weren’t so many cats! Kittens and cats who survive the disease may lose an eye, or all vision!

Kotor Kitties helps Kotor and other communities throughout Montenegro humanely reduce the overpopulation of community cats through spaying and neutering.

We are proud to be the first High Quality, High Volume Spay-Neuter project and the first Trap-Neuter-Return project in Montenegro!

Montenegro

Montenegro is a small Balkan country that was part of the former Yugoslavia. Sharing the Dalmatian coast with Croatia, it sits across the Adriatic Sea from southern Italy.

Tourists flock to Montenegro to enjoy the stunning beauty of its coastline and mountains, friendly people, and delicious food. They also discover a massive and tragic overpopulation of community animals (unwanted cats and dogs).

Kotor Kitties unites the concern of tourists, the skill of local veterinarians, and the compassion of local people to provide a humane solution for the community animals: Montenegro’s first sterilization program of High Quality-High Volume Spaying and Neutering (HQHVSN). Our program includes Montenegro’s first Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) project for cats.

In 2022 we’ve introduced vaccines into parts of our program, working towards the goal of a full Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) program. Read more about this important part of cat care and spay-neuter programs on our vaccination page.

A targeted and sustained spay-neuter program is the most effective way to address cat and dog populations that exceed the capacity of the local community to properly care for them.

It not only helps cut the overall population of animals, but prevents the health problems of overbreeding and the hormone-related behavioral problems associated with unsterilized animals.
