It’s terrible to see exposed ribs, swollen bellies and dull coats due to malnutrition. It’s not that good-natured locals and tourists don’t go out of their way to feed them – there are simply too many city cats (and dogs!) in Montenegro to take care of. Litter after litter of beautiful kittens getting sick and dying from the virus – all of which could have been avoided if there weren’t so many of them! Kittens and cats who survive the disease may lose an eye or become completely blind.
Kotor Kitties helps Kotor and other communities throughout Montenegro to humanely reduce the overpopulation of urban cats through spaying and neutering.

Montenegro to enjoy the stunning beauty of the coast and mountains, friendly people and delicious food. And at the same time, they see a massive and tragic overpopulation of “urban animals” – unwanted cats and dogs.
A targeted and sustained spay-neuter program is the most effective way to address cat and dog populations that exceed the capacity of the local community to properly care for them. This not only helps reduce the overall population of animals, but prevents the health problems caused by overbreeding and the hormone-related behavioral problems associated with unsterilized animals.
