Cats in Other Parts of Montenegro

There are community cats all over Montenegro, not just in Kotor.

Many of the tourist areas along the coast attract friendly cats who hang around restaurants and tourist spots hoping for tidbits and an ear-scratch or helping themselves to food from the dumpsters.

Feeding unsterilized cats, of course, creates more cats, and overpopulation contributes to diseases the kittens succumb to all too easily.

When the tourist season ends, the hotels, restaurants and shops lock up for the winter. Many cats then have no one to provide food.

Even those with regular feeders lose the supplemental calories and nutrition that come from the tourist industry until visitors return in the spring.

The COVID pandemic of 2020 hit the coastal animals and their feeders hard.

Not only were the tourists and restaurant dumpsters not on hand to help, but many feeders are dependent on the tourist industry for their livelihoods.

Outside the tourist areas, community cats are present in large numbers, but often they are less visible. Warier of strangers, they lurk in nooks and crannies, live under buildings or in abandoned cars, and appear mostly at nightfall.

Due to the financial constraints of our program, Kotor Kitties can only provide sterilization surgeries in a few of Montenegro’s 25 municipalities. Through our volunteer kitty helpers and our humane-education program, we strive to provide as many resources as possible to animal caretakers throughout the country.
