Once upon a time in New Jersey, a lovely brown tabby cat was abruptly kicked out of her home. An adult son had convinced his family that his allergies were more important that the welfare of the little cat. She settled into the family’s backyard, where other cats were gathered and fed.

Sadly, none of the cats had been “fixed”— spayed or neutered. So they proceeded to do as cats will, and reproduced. In time, as generations of cats built up, they overflowed the yard and joined other colonies of cats around the neighborhood that were responsibly cared for—meaning spayed and neutered, with stable populations.

The influx of unsterilized cats led one of the caretakers, Stephanie, to investigate where all the unsterilized cats were coming from… which brought her to the backyard where Gramma lived.

When Stephanie discovered the area there were a pair of tiny kittens with Upper Respiratory Infections (URIs) that she immediately took home to care for and place for adoption. Going back to trap and “fix” the rest of the cats, Gramma was pointed out as being the grandmother of the sick kittens she was caring for.

Stephanie explained:

“I don’t know why Gram took a liking to me or how she figured out where I lived. One winter day there she was – asleep in one of the cat beds in my heated garage. She came nearly everyday after that. If I didn’t see her I’d just yell her name and almost always she appeared within a few minutes.

During the summer of ’18 I noticed she’d gotten thin & seemed to not be able to eat even soft food. So I took her in for dental work and she of course became our cat. Gramma loved being at our shore house with only a couple of other cats, her catnip toys, napping on a sunny window sill, and sleeping next to me at night. I wish Gramma had found us years earlier, but I hope we gave her a little while of love, happiness, & comfort.

I have no idea of her real age. With our vet we guessed about 12 or 13. But she seemed in good health & spirits until her very abrupt & unexpected downturn recently. We learned of multiple serious issues we hadn’t known a thing about. She died last week.

The more you rescue, the more you lose and it never gets any easier. So I’ll be seeing you at the bridge my sweet Grammy. Until then ~”
